Gippsland Innovation & Education Precinct

Here Studio and SED Advisory worked together on the Concept Masterplan, Concept Design, and Business Plan for the Gippsland Innovation and Education Precinct. In preparation for the closing of the Hazelwood Coal Mine, the project aims to bring alternative employment and training benefits to the area, building on the innovative classes and teaching already taking place at the Morwell Technology College.

Stakeholder consultation was carried out with local schools, energy and technology industry representatives, and Universities, among others. As part of this consultation, a workshop with pupils of two local schools identified their area assets, their aspirations and the ways an Innovation and Education Precinct could support them as they moved through the education system.

A concept masterplan for the site was developed alongside the concept design of a landmark mixed use building, housing laboratories, offices, cafe and meeting spaces.

By applying learning from a 2015 research tour to London Future Cities Catapult, Here Studio developed five ‘avatars’ of typical users with specific needs - study, travel, access and integration. The avatars were first produced for the current situation and then updated to reflect the goals of the development, showing the ways that the precinct could assist in achieving them.

The Victorian State Government allocated $17 million funding to the project in late 2016.
