Yarraville, “Little Berry” house extension

Little Berry is a house renovation and extension project in Yarraville. We met the client at the University of Melbourne, where they and Ammon were working on PhDs. The young couple were interested in working together in a participatory way.

The brief was for a simple, sustainable home on a small budget. The front weatherboard section of the existing house needed re-stumping, straightening and insulation. The rear of the existing house was poorly built with low ceiling heights and an un-reinforced concrete slab on the ground.

We worked together on a design which addressed these building issues, and which also took advantage of North and West sun and created a strong connection from inside of the house to a new permaculture garden in the backyard.

The completed building is bright and airy, with high level windows in the kitchen bringing in plenty of light and providing natural ventillation to the space, keeping running costs low.
