Shipping Container Extension, Coburg
We worked with this family to design an extension to give them larger, and more varied, spaces in their single storey home in Melbourne's inner suburbs. From our first visit, we loved their sense of style, incorporating vintage furniture and industrial items in their decoration.
The design was based around an under-used courtyard at the back of the house. While it faces north, it is currently un-enclosed and faces a dilapidated shed. The proposal removes this shed, and places two shipping containers, containing the kitchen and dining room, on the northern side of the courtyard. A glazed extension and entry area links this to the existing house, and frees up space inside the house for busy and quiet zones of living space - important in a family with growing children!
The shipping containers have a very distinctive appearance, which fits with the family aesthetic. To make them stand out, the rest of the materials are simple - timber, glass and polished concrete, with splashes of colour.
