Steiner School Performance Hall

Here Studio were approached by this Steiner School to design a new 300m2 multi-purpose hall and music classrooms on their large rural site in regional Victoria.  The design is integrated with the landscape - a large deck and ramp give sheltered places for children to play and learn throughout the year.  To enclose the building and existing courtyard, the back of the building is constructed from hempcrete, with coloured 'jewel' windows onto the hall, drawing people through the space.

With representatives from the school, we developed a vision and brief for the project, which included the way that the new building should integrate with the school’s educational and teaching philosophy, the atmosphere and feeling of the different spaces, and the materials used. Weekly meetings with the client, and efficient and collaborative working methods were the backbone of the design process.  In addition, we held workshops with parents and teachers at the school to develop the project vision and purpose, and to test the design as it progressed.

To reduce risk in the later stages of the project, a number of consultants, including services engineers, structural engineers and cost consultants were engaged early in the project, identifying areas which needed particular consideration.

The project was submitted for Government funding in early January 2017.
